About the West Central Zone
Covering a broad geographical expanse, the West Central Zone extends across the states of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and Goa, as well as the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, where five endangered languages have been prioritized for documentation.
In this zone, five languages have been identified as endangered in the first phase of documentation under SPPEL: Baradi, Bhala, Bharwad/Bharwadi, Diwehi and Nihali — the last of which is one of the world's rare language isolates, with no proven genetic relationship to any known language family.

The West Central Zone encompasses states and union territories with diverse and critical ethnolinguistic communities. Our dedicated research teams work closely with native speakers to document, archive, and revitalize languages that form an essential part of the region's cultural heritage.
