Hercules Singh Munda comes from the Munda tribe of Jharkhand. He holds a Master’s in Linguistics degree from SOAS, London and the University of Edinburgh, UK and has worked on the language documentation of Soo, a critically endangered langauge of Uganda with less than 100 speakers. He is a recipient of several prestigious scholarships and awards, including, Felix Scholarship by SOAS, London, the Marang Gomke Scholarship by the Government of Jharkhand, the Kathryn Davis Project for Peace Award by Middlebury University, USA, and the Language Legacies Grant by Endangered Language Fund (ELF). He has previously worked with the Mundari, Santali, Ho, & Kurukh language communities in Jharkhand, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh. His past work with these language communities spans across language documentation, corpus development and most importantly, linguistic research. He is a staunch advocate of Mother Tongue Education and inclusive language technology for tribal languages, and before joining CIIL, he worked extensively in these areas in his personal capacity. At present, he is working as a Jr Research Person in the SPPEL Department.
