SPPEL has recognized six zones on the basis of geographical distribution of the languages. Southern Zone is one among them. Southern zone covers documentation of the endangered languages spoken in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Telangana. Twenty languages have been chosen from this zone to be worked upon.

Resource Persons from SPPEL, CIIL, Mysuru and other investigators from various Universities and Institution like University of Kerala, Annamalai University, Madurai Kamarajar University, University of Mysore and Anthropological Survey of India, Mysuru are working in different languages.
